But the actual numbers are lower than they could be: According to a 2016 report from the National Center for Women & Information Technology, women hold only 25% of computing occupations.
A 2013 study published in Oxford Academic and discussed (paywall) in Harvard Business Review found that 50% of women employed in technical fields, mostly in engineering and computer science, had switched out of those fields after 12 years. The question we should be asking ourselves is why. Only 20% of professional women working in other fields had switched careers at the end of a 12-year period.
As alarming as these figures seem, I don’t believe women are victims of systematic persecution in the tech industry. Rather, women may not be cultivating the important traits that can help them succeed, and this may be part of the reason why they leave the sector entirely.
