Women In Tech: Rose Afriyie is co-founder and Executive Director of mRelief.
mRelief (formerly SNAP) is a nonprofit startup working to help people gain access to social services.
Originally from Bronx, New York, Rose Afriyie discovered the significance of food stamps for families. With her degree in public policy from the University of Michigan, she decided to get into tech because “she believes writing software is a superpower that people of color and women should have exposure to”1. Rose’s superpower has opened families to food benefits so they can spend less money on food. In return, this allows families to have more funds for economic opportunities.
“Before mRelief, she worked as a Marketing Associate for Google where she co-produced Oprah Winfrey’s first Google+ Hangout and President Obama’s annual State of the Union Hangout. She interned in the Domestic Policy Council of the White House during the passage of the Affordable Care Act. Rose is a lifetime learner of Ruby code, a founder, writer, BYP100 Chicago Board Chair and a change maker who lives in Chicago.”2
